What is a Mantra - Pack of Runners

Learning to harness your mind is one of the most powerful things you can do as a runner.

By definition, a mantra is “a phrase that you continually repeat to yourself for motivation”. It’s a psychology trick that runners have used for years. But what really is a mantra?

Think of a mantra as a tool you can use to help you improve your performance. Most runners use a repetitive phrase consisting of three or four words. Or, they repeat a single statement over and over again. They allow you to harness the power of your mind. In essence, you’re using your mind as a performance enhancer.

Have you ever wondered why runners keep breaking world records? When Roger Bannister ran the first sub 4 minute mile, people believed that humans could not run that fast. They believed people were too physically limited to do such a thing. Now, there are high school kids that run this fast.

Running Like the Kenyans Do (Part I)

The world of competitive distance running has been historically dominated by people from a single country: Kenya. In recent years, many people have attempted to figure out what exactly happens in Kenya that allows them to churn out so many talented distance runners. Results are murky. The answer appears to be some combination of a multitude of factors including: training philosophy, terrain, altitude, equipment (or lack of), lifestyle, diet, body type, attitude, and running surface. Regardless of what the answer truly is, the fact remains that Kenyans are superior runners.

Why You Should Strengthen Your Hips

Most runners do not start out looking to strengthen their muscles by running. Goals vary, but it usually does not involve any type of “bulking up”. Competitive runners usually get involved in some sort of lower body strength training, although the focus is not on building mass – it’s on staying lean and strong.

What runners are not – are advanced weightlifters.

Strengthening your hips seems unusual to someone who is not a seasoned veteran in the weight room. So what exactly will working on strength and flexibility in your hips do to make your experience as a runner better?
